A corner of Bandung – From dusk till dawn

Bandung is the third largest city in Indonesia. It is also the capital of West Java Province. The city is located on a 768 meters above-sea-level plateau and surrounded by mountains, which makes the temperature quite cool all year long. The mountains around Bandung with their long volcanic activities make the land of the area fertile. The combination of fertile soil and cool temperature is perfect for plantations, especially tea. That is why travelers can find many tea plantations around Bandung.

With its beautiful landscape and cool weather, Bandung is known as a kind of resort area which attracted many people from Jakarta who flooded Bandung and make heavy traffics in Bandung almost every week-end.

With so many factories, especially garment, Bandung is also known as a business city as well, while for others it is also known as a student city, for there are many universities can be found in and around Bandung.

Dago, is an area in the northern part of the city which is considered as the residential area for the elite in the colonial era. Nowadays travelers who visit Bandung can find rows of restaurants and hotels as well as clothing outlets in the area.

I took these pictures from Dago Pakar, an area more to the north that considered as the highest part of the city. Nowadays, there are many cafes and restaurants which offer dramatic views of the city from above, so people can enjoy delicious meals while seeing the vistas. Some people prefer to visit the area by night in order to see Bandung’s city light. Can you imagine how romantic it is when you have a candle light dinner with your loved one overlooking the beautiful sea of city lights that glitter like diamonds while local musician playing a sweet love song?

Siapa yang gak kenal Bandung, sebuah kota indah dengan udaranya yang sejuk, yang juga menjadi ibu kota Propinsi Jawa Barat? Kota yang terletak di sebuah dataran tinggi dan dikelilingi gunung gemunung ini, akhir-akhir ini selalu mengalami kepadatan lalu lintas pada akhir pekan akibat membanjirnya pengunjung dari Jakarta dan kota-kota sekitarnya. Memang sejak dahulu Bandung yang terletak di ketinggian 768 meter di atas permukaan laut telah terkenal sebagai kota wisata, selain juga dikenal sebagai kota pelajar dan kota bisnis.

Di sebelah utara kota, terdapat sebuah daerah yang dikenal sebagai daerah elite-nya Bandung. Daerah yang sekarang penuh dengan berbagai factory outlet, restoran dan hotel ini dikenal dengan nama Dago. Lebih ke utara lagi, terdapat daerah perbukitan yang katanya merupakan tempat tertinggi di kota Bandung yang dikenal dengan sebutan Dago Pakar.

Foto-foto di postingan ini aku ambil di Dago Pakar yang sekarang mulai dipenuhi dengan cafe dan restoran yang menawarkan keindahan pemandangan kota dari ketinggian, khususnya pada malam hari. Kebayang gak betapa romantisnya suasana makan malam berdua dengan orang yang terkasih di sebuah cafe dengan diterangi cahaya lilin, sambil memandang kerlip lampu-lampu kota di kejauhan yang berkilau seperti berlian, sementara band setempat melantunkan tembang cinta?

Visiting a new Buddhist temple

“Did you go to Thailand recently?”

“Is that the famous temple in Myanmar?”

Those are some of many questions asked by my friends after they saw the pictures above. What about you? Do you think that the building in the above picture is in Thailand or Myanmar, too? If that so, then you are wrong my dear friends. The building is in Indonesia. It is in North Sumatera to be precise, even it is not too far from Medan. You are not too wrong to think that the building is not in Indonesia, because the physical appearance of the building is like those in Myanmar. Yes, the building here is a replica of Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar, although the one in North Sumatera is not as big as the original one. The place is called Taman Alam Lumbini (Lumbini Natural Park). It is a Buddhist centre as well as the place for worship to the followers of Lord Buddha.

Taman Alam Lumbini was inaugurated with a great ceremony in October 2010. The ceremony itself was attended by more than 1300 monks and more than 200 lay people from various countries around the world.

The main building of Taman Alam Lumbini is a two storey building with a giant golden stupa above it. The stupa itself is 46.8 meters tall.

The building compound is surrounded by a brick wall with a very big gate. There are two pillars with dragons side by side the gate, and behind the gate there are two statues which depicting The Goddess of Mercy and Ksitigarbha Boddhisattva. There is also a tall pillar with small bells that tinkling loudly as the wind blows. Some similar small bells are also placed at the top of the main stupa.

Inside the wall, a beautiful garden with many Buddhist statues is surrounding the main building. Before the main building there is a plaza, which always crowded by visitors. There are also some stalls sell vegetarian foods in there.

In the main building, there is a giant hall with four marble Buddha statues facing to every cardinal directions. In front of every statue lay some cushions to be used by kneeling worshippers, and there are also four cone-shaped-rotated lamps which housing many small Buddha statues in the corner between every two marble statues.

Non Buddhist visitors are allowed to enter the hall, but they have to keep silent and not to disturb other people praying in there. To enter the hall, ones should take off their shoes. Taking pictures with other means than camera is not allowed in there.

Everybody is free to visit Taman Alam Lumbini. There are no tickets or admissions to enter the place, but please keep your manner and ethics while you are in the compound considering that the place is the place of worship.

Ketika pertama kali melihat foto-foto di atas tanpa membaca keterangannya, banyak teman menyangka bahwa foto-foto itu aku ambil di Thailand atau di Myanmar. Memang jadi tidak terlalu salah, mengingat bahwa bentuk bangunannya menyerupai bentuk bangunan-bangunan di sana. Tapi jangan salah lho, bangunan ini terletak di Indonesia, tepatnya di Sumatera Utara. Posisi tepatnya adalah di antara Berastagi dan Medan. Memang tidak tepat di tepi jalan raya yang menghubungkan kedua kota itu, tetapi dari jalan puncak stupa yang menjulang setinggi 46,8 meter itu kelihatan dengan jelas.

Bangunan yang merupakan replika Pagoda Shwedagon di Myanmar ini dinamakan Taman Alam Lumbini. Tempat ini dibangun untuk menjadi pusat Agama Buddha terbesar di Indonesia. Peresmiannya baru dilakukan pada akhir Oktober 2010 yang lalu, dengan dihadiri oleh lebih dari 1300 rahib dan lebih dari 200 perwakilan umat dari berbagai negara di dunia ini.

Kompleks Taman Alam Lumbini dikelilingi pagar tembok dengan sebuah gapura yang diapit pilar berwarna merah dan dililit oleh naga di kiri kanannya. Di belakang gapura tersebut, terdapat patung Dewi Welas Asih di satu sisi, sementara di sisi lainnya terdapat patung Boddhisatva Ksitigarba. Kalau kita melangkah melalui gapura, kita akan berada di sebuah pelataran luas di depan bangunan utama. Di sebelah kiri terdapat semacam tiang berwarna emas dengan patung-patung yang indah, dimana pada puncaknya tergantung lonceng-lonceng kecil yang akan bergemerincing akibat tiupan angin. Di puncak stupa di bangunan utama juga terdapat lonceng-lonceng kecil sejenis. Di salah satu sudut pelataran itu terdapat beberapa kios yang menjual aneka makanan vegetarian.

Bangunan utama di kompleks ini berbentuk sebuah aula besar yang terletak di bawah stupa. Di tengah aula terdapat empat patung Buddha yang terbuat dari batu marmer dan diletakkan menghadap ke empat arah mata angin. Di sudut-sudutnya, di antara dua patung Buddha, terdapat lampu berbentuk kerucut yang berputar dan didalamnya terdapat banyak sekali patung-patung Buddha berukuran kecil.

Semua orang, termasuk yang tidak beragama Buddha, diperkenankan berkunjung ke Taman Alam Lumbini, bahkan sampai masuk ke dalam bangunan utamanya. Untuk masuk tidak dipungut biaya apapun, hanya saja kita diminta untuk melepas alas kaki jika ingin memasuki bangunan utamanya. Selain itu, kita juga harus tenang dan menjaga kesopanan karena banyak juga orang yang berdoa di situ. Anehnya, kalau biasanya diberbagai tempat lain pengunjung dilarang memotret mempergunakan kamera, khususnya kamera-kamera serius (SLR), di sini justru sebaliknya. Pengunjung dilarang memotret mempergunakan kamera yang terdapat di handphone ataupun di perangkat lainny.–

A lake that hold records

The lake that holds records is located in north Sumatera, Indonesia, and known as Danau Toba or Lake Toba. So what records it held so far? Well, despite that the lake is the most popular tourist destination in North Sumatra, the lake also known as the largest lake in Indonesia. It has about 100 kilometers long, 30 kilometers wide, and more than 500 meters deep in some parts.

The Toba is also known as the largest volcanic lake in the world. Some experts said that the lake was the site of a supervolcanic eruption which occurred some 75,000 years ago; and the eruption caused the great climate change at that time. It is the largest known explosive eruption on earth in the last 25 million years. The supervolcano erupted so large that it deposited more than 15 centimeters thick ash layers on almost all area of South Asia. The ash was so thick at that time, and blocked the sun for several weeks, which made the global temperature decrease by around 5 degrees Celcius.

The eruption also resulted in a giant caldera, which after filled with water formed a big lake with a small island that formed by an uplifting due to partial refilling of the magma chamber at the bottom of the lake. The island is known as Pulau Samosir or Samosir Island.

That was the origin of the lake according to scientific approach. For the local people, however, there is also a local legend to explain how such a big lake formed in their neighborhood.

Anyway, I took most of these pictures in a hill known as One Tree Hill in Sidikalang region. It is a barren hill with only a tree on top of it. I’ve just wondering, what will the hill name be if someday a lightning struck the tree and make the tree fall  😛

 

Ringkasan :

Danau Toba ternyata tercatat sebagai pemegang beberapa rekor. Selain terkenal sebagai tempat wisata yang paling terkenal di Sumatera Utara, Danau Toba juga dikenal sebagai Danau terluas di Indonesia. Bayangkan saja luasnya jika panjang danau itu mencapai 100 kilometer dan lebarnya mencapai 30 kilometer. Dan dengan kedalaman mencapai lebih dari 500 meter di titik terdalamnya, menyebabkan danau ini juga merupakan danau terdalam di Indonesia, bahkan di dunia.

Danau Toba juga merupakan danau vulkanis terbesar di dunia. Para ahli mengatakan bahwa Danau Toba merupakan lokasi letusan maha dahsyat sekitar 75.000 tahun yang lalu, bahkan letusan ini tercatat pula sebagai letusan gunung api terhebat yang pernah terjadi di bumi dalam 25 juta tahun terakhir ini. Letusannya waktu itu sempat menyebabkan sinar matahari terhalang selama beberapa minggu sehingga mengakibatkan penurunan suhu global sebesar 5 derajat Celcius. Letusan hebat itu membentuk kaldera raksasa yang setelah terisi dengan air membentuk danau seperti yang kita kenal sekarang. Di tengah danau terdapat sebuah pulau yang kita kenal dengan nama Pulau Samosir yang terbentuk akibat terangkatnya sebagian dasar danau akibat aktivitas magma di bawahnya.

Seperti halnya di berbagai daerah lain, penduduk setempat lebih suka mendengar cerita legenda dibandingkan penjelasan ilmiah mengenai terjadinya Danau Toba ini. Dan memang ada sebuah legenda yang hidup di masyarakat yang menerangkan asal usul terjadinya danau yang indah ini.

Anyway, foto-foto yang aku sertakan di sini aku ambil dari atas sebuah bukit di daerah Sidikalang. Bukit itu dinamai One Tree Hill (Bukit Dengan Sebatang Pohon), karena memang di atas bukit gundul tersebut betul-betul hanya tersisa sebatang pohon saja. Kebayang gak apa jadinya nama bukit ini kalau pohon itu tumbang disambar petir?  😛
