A corner of Semarang at dawn

Semarang is the largest city in Central Java Province, Indonesia. It is also the capital of the province. The city is located at the north coast of Java; hence it is also called the Port of Java for tourism purposes. It is said that the name Semarang derived from the Javanese word “asem” and “arang. “Asem” can be translated literally as tamarind and “arang” as rare or uncommon. Perhaps it was a place that only had a few tamarind trees back then  🙂

The below pictures were taken at Jalan Pandanaran, one of the main streets in Semarang. At the background, there is an open lawn or square which is used as the public central activity premise known as the Simpang Lima lawn. The area’s name shows that from there people can go to five different directions.

In the pictures, you can see a tall structure that looks like a lighthouse. The tall structure is actually the minaret of Baiturrahman Grand Mosque located in Simpang Lima. The mosque is one of Semarang’s many landmarks. Travelers can ask for a permission to go up to the top of the minaret, and enjoy the bird-eye view of Semarang panorama from up there.

Jalan Pandanaran, as one of the five streets that are crossing the Simpang Lima, is approximately 1.5 kilometres long. It is connecting Simpang Lima Area and the Tugu Muda area. Along the street, there are offices, hotels, restaurants and stores. Among all there are many stores that sell Semarang’s traditional food such as bandeng presto (pressure-cooked milkfish), lunpia Semarang (Semarang style spring rolls), and wingko babad (flame grilled sweet cake made of coconut and flour).

Aside of delicious traditional foods, Semarang also offers many interesting places to visit. So . . . anybody interested in visiting Semarang?   😎

  8. Wow ! Feel very peaceful and fresh, I love the second photo madly ^ v ^ You are trully an early bird,Chris113jkt ! Thanks so so so so so much , for sharing these beautiful sunrise photos ! ^ v ^

p/s : in my place, there are several kinds of delicous sping rolls that I love so well , like the “gỏi cuốn” (with pork and shrimp filling), fried”chả giò” (with pork or seafood filling-very crispy) , “chả cuốn”(squid bologna or pork bologna and fried rice cake filling)… lunpia Semarang sounds very nice :3 yum yum !

    • Hi Yin, for me lunpia Semarang is very delicious. It can be crispy fried or just plain. The filings are bamboo sprouts, fried egg, and beef, chicken or shrimp. You have to try it when you have an opportunity to visit Indonesia, especially Semarang.

  9. Beautiful !!

  10. I’d love to visit Semarang! Beautiful city and good food, what more could a traveler ask for?!

  11. Chris makanan terkenal asal Semarang apa ya? :D. Foto2nya bagus-bagus, apalagi yang malam hari diterangi lampu2 makin indah! :).

    • Terimakasih, Mbak 🙂
Makanan khas Semarang banyak lho Mbak.

      • Hahaha iya saya lupa semua pdhl sdh sering mencobanya. Yg paling sering bandeng presto, lunpia & wingko. Jai pengenn :D.

    • He he he . .

  14. Nice article! Nice pictures! Haven’t visited Semarang yet. One day, I hope. 😉

  15. Indah bangetttt…

  16. I like the name Simpang Lima.:)

    • Thank you, Sharifah,
By the way, why do you like the name Simpang Lima?

      • I guess it appeals to my imagination. As if you stand at the crossroad, and whichever road you decide to take, there will be something different and interesting in each one. I’ve not been to Semarang…cuma imaginasi saya.:)

    • Well, your imagination is 100% correct. The Simpang Lima is actually a lawn in the middle of a crossroad, and you can go to five different directions from there 🙂

  17. kece Mas!!
itu mendung ya? abis foto2 ujankah?
salah nih liat post ini malem2, jd pengen lumpia kan.. *mulai berpikir beli lumpia blum digoreng buat stok di rumah*

    • Terimakasih Nit.

Kita tinggal goreng kalau mau makan. Rasanya juga ok. Kalau gak salah satu pack isinya 6 atau 8, mereknya Mataram (*wahkoqjadiiklannih*)

  18. waaah fotonya keren-keren banget 😀

  19. no..komen dah foto2nya …keren habissssss…pakai merk apa om…mohon bimbingannya om…salah kenal

As for the food, Semarang has many delicious food to savour. You have to try them if you have an opportunity to visit Semarang.
