Its official name is GPIB Immanuel – GPIB stands for Gereja Protestan di Indonesia bagian Barat (Protestants Church in the Western part of Indonesia). The church is located in the old part of Semarang, Central Java, and considered one of the oldest churches in Central Java. It was built in 1753 and up till now its condition is still well maintained since it is still being used for weekly sermons. The locals call it “Gereja Blenduk” since it has a big dome shaped like that of a mosque at the top, which in Bahasa Jawa (Javanese language), such a form is called “blenduk”
The interior of the church is still like when it was at the 18th century except for minor modern additionals. Even the chairs, pews, and the iron stair lead to its old baroque style pipe organ are still the same as it has since the very beginning. Unfortunately, the mechanisms of the organ have been removed completely because it has already broken beyond repair.
