Beautiful beach with a legendary ghost

The beach is known as Palabuhanratu, but many people call it wrongly as Pelabuhan Ratu. It is located at the south coast of Sukabumi district, West Java, not too far from Ujung Genteng. Previously it just a small traditional fishing village, but now it has grown into a beautiful holiday resort with many hotels and cottages.

Palabuhanratu is in a bay facing the Indian Ocean with its roaring waves breaking on the beautiful sandy beach. Even-though visitors can do any beach activities there, they have to be very cautious for the massive rip currents in that area. It often makes people drowned in the sea which make the legend about Nyi Roro Kidul, the legendary immortal queen and ruler of the South Seas, become stronger and stronger. People say that they, who were drowned in the area, actually have been summoned by the queen to her invincible palace at the bottom of the sea.

According to the legend, Palabuhanratu is Nyi Roro Kidul’s favorit place. In the area, visitors are advised not to wear green clothes, especially while on the beach, because green is the queen’s favourite colour. By wearing it, people believe that such person shows his or her intention to be summoned by the queen.
